Cat found in shipping container gets new home

CALGARY — That's one down and eight lives to go.
Mandarin — the once slight and frightened feline found by Calgary-based Icon & Stone Inc. inside a shipment from China — has bounced back from near death and found a new home.
Following a spaying and vaccination, Mandarin has moved in to better digs with Angela Izzo, who said it was love at first sight when fellow Icon & Stone employees raised the alarm over the company's unexpected cargo in July.
Izzo got the call last Tuesday that, if her offer to adopt still stood, she could pick up Mandarin from the Calgary Humane Society on Friday.
"I wanted her that day because she looked so frail and brittle," Izzo told QMI Agency.
"Honestly, just seeing how traumatized she was when she came out of that container, and for her to survive three months in quarantine, and all the medication and nursing back to health, I just knew she was a fighter."
The Calico kitten, which weighed just two lbs. when it was taken by the Calgary Humane Society following the month-long journey form China, has been spayed, vaccinated and, according to Izzo, become a bit of a fat cat, weighing in just under eight lbs.
"She's on a bit of a diet because she's a little chubby," she said.
Izzo's new friend spent much of her weekend like any cat — napping.
While her recovery is on track, Mandarin still bears the scars of her time spent alone and without food inside the shipping container, including a tail broken in two places.
"It's really sad when I just look at her," Izzo said.
"It just breaks my heart, but she loves giving kisses and is constantly licking."
