Good deed puts Jay in jailhouse
JAY Shipston, one half of Sea FM's morning crew, usually works from five to nine AM, however, for the next week, it will be 24 hours a day for Jay.
Jay entered solitary confinement yesterday – in a purpose-built jail cell at Caneland Central where he will spend seven days performing challenges; all to raise money for Give Me 5 For Kids.
“I think this week will be full of real work, not like I'm usually used to,” Jay laughed.
“We (Sea FM) do things like this all the time. I have jumped out of a plane and I have a Sea FM tattoo but I have to say this is the craziest thing I have ever done.”
Although he admitted to being nervous before being dragged into the makeshift jail cell, Jay, who is also a representative for Give Me 5 for Kids, said he was proud to be able to help raise money for the children's wards at Mackay and Proserpine Base hospitals.
“We participate every year; it's just such a great cause. Last year we raised $12,500 and this year we want to get to the $25,000 mark.”
Jay's mum, Janet Shipston, said she would miss her son. “I'm very proud of Jay, he is helping a great cause,” Ms Shipston said.
“Jay has been an entertainer for as long as I can remember. I can tell you it's going to be quiet without him around.”
With shredded paper to sleep on, and a compulsory security escort to the bathroom, Jay said he would be passing the time by getting some work done.
“I have a laptop to work on but no internet connection.
“The best thing about this week is no-one will wake me up in the morning.”
Jay encourages everyone to come and have a chuckle at him locked in the cell.
“Come and see me, I'm not going anywhere,” he laughed.
